Visual Language - Dan Meth’s Trilogy Meter

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Combining visuals with text to communicate movie ratings, Dan Meth’s Trilogy Meter is a top-notch example of the effective use of Visual Language as opposed to text-based delivery alone.

Dan Meth's Movie Trilogy

The eye can glide through individual blocks to compare squeal rankings of the same movie franchise. Viewers can also compare multiple blocks with minimal effort, easily spotting the star-pupils compared and rotten tomatoes.

Dan Meth’s site is packed full of great visuals, illustrations, comics, sketches and video - well worth a look.

Manus’ Website Critique

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Manus’s web review from week 11 is well worth a read:

http://manoose47.wordpress.com/2008/12/14/week-11/

His review highlights the target market of UCI online, and how the design is informed by the type of site user (User-Centric Design). In terms of simplicity Manus has identified colour, the use of imagery and white space (including non-data ink). Visual hierarchy has been discussed in terms of typography and he has spotted the increase/decrease text feature on the site, and he has identified several visual conventions used on the site. He’s even remembered about complimentary coolour schemes!

Suggestions to improve visual-language module

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

Here are some interesting suggestions from the Visual Language students on how the module could be improved:

  • “More paint!….. & Tea”
  • “nothing much, just have more outings and things like that, go abroad”
  • “not have it on a Friday morning”

Generally the feedback was positive - thanks for the input lads & ladies :)

The Golden Mean

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Mona Lisa

We covered the Golden Mean in last Friday’s class.

In terms of the Mona Lisa:

If we draw a rectangle whose base extends from the woman’s right wrist to her left elbow and vertically until it reaches the very top of her head, we can see the golden ratio: The head being 1 and the wrist to tip of head being 1.6.

If we draw the Golden Rectangle, the edges of these new squares come to all the important focal points of the woman: her chin, her eye, her nose, and the upturned corner of her mouth…

Worldmapper: Informational Graphics

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

In last week’s lecture we looked at examples of visual language from comics, animation, informational graphics, photography, magazine layout, interface design and the web.

We saw informational graphics from http://www.worldmapper.org, where complex statical information is presented visually in map format for surveys as diverse as global film consumption, televisions in use, gross domestic income, toys exports and many more.

Watch how beneficial these information graphics are in Alisia Miller’s Ted Talks presentation on the topic of news coverage in the USA:
